To mark the 77th Pakistan National Day, H.E. Mr. Afrasiab, the High Commissioner and Mrs. Asia Afrasiab, hosted a Reception at the Wellington Club on 27 March 2017. H.E. Mr. David Bennett, Honorable Minister of Veterans Affairs, Minister for Food Safety, Associate Minister of Immigration and Associate Minister of Transport, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The Reception was attended by Mr. Andrew Little, Leader of Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition, Members of the Parliament, government officials, scholars, journalists, members of the diplomatic corps and Pakistani community.
The High Commissioner welcomed the distinguished guests on the occasion and recalled the significance of the day. Pakistan and New Zealand enjoy friendly and cordial relations. He highlighted significant developments in bilateral relations in recent years.
Earlier, a simple and dignified flag hoisting ceremony was held in the morning of 23 March 2017 at the Pakistan High Commission. A cross section of people living in Greater Wellington region and Palmerston North attended the event. The National Hockey Team of Pakistan, which was touring New Zealand also attended. In his brief remarks the High Commissioner highlighted the significance of the day and underlined that the democratic Government in Pakistan was working for the economic and social development of the country. He also acknowledged the contribution made by Pakistanis in New Zealand and their support provided to the High Commission.
