High Commissioner’s Letter to Pakistani Community in New Zealand

Dear Members,

As you all know that in the wake of the spread of COVID-19 we are going through a difficult time and governments all over the world are forced to make difficult decisions. This is an unprecedented situation for which no one was ready.

In this difficult time, I want to assure you that your High Commission is working round the clock to assist those who have been affected by the fallout of COVID-19. We are aware of the various issues faced by the Pakistani community members including those affected by the flight closures on both sides. We are also in touch with Pakistan Association of New Zealand (PANZ)- which is doing an excellent work- as well as other regional Community organizations, to coordinate our response in providing relief to those affected in New Zealand.

I am proud to say that the Pakistani community in New Zealand is one of the most generous and thoughtful. Be it 2005 earthquake, 2010 and 2011 floods in Pakistan, or the last year Christchurch attacks in New Zealand, Pakistani community in New Zealand has gone beyond the call of duty to help their fellowbrethren in both the countries. While the Government of Pakistan is trying its best to contain the spread ofoutbreak, we must remain cognizant of the plight of those who are left financially vulnerable owing to the grinding halt in economic activity.

In these trying times I would call upon you to show compassion and open heartedness for your poor and needy brothers and sisters in Pakistan. To my great encouragement, I have already received many calls and messages from Pakistanis within New Zealand who are determined to play their part at this crucial juncture and to assist the Government of Pakistan in its efforts to help the deserving people in Pakistan.

I would like to inform you that the Prime Minister of Pakistan has established “Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for COVID-19” to collect funds to provide relief to those in need. The account details are as under:
