Iqbal Day

Iqbal Day at the Pakistan High Commission, Wellington


An evening to celebrate the philosophy, poetry and life of Allama Mohammad Iqbal was organized at the Pakistan High Commission, Wellington, on 19 May 2012.

This was the first ever event of its nature arranged in New Zealand to honour the Poet of the East for his epoch making poetry and eternal philosophy.

Speakers representing cross section of the community paid glowing tributes to Iqbal’s global and timeless message – the message of eternal hope, dynamism, passionate living, individual responsibility, prophetic love and devotion.

Iqbal’s concept of ‘Khudi” embodies unique freshness and a guideline for the modern day living too. Iqbal was extolled for his vision which culminated in the creation of Pakistan. On this occasion Iqbal’s poetry was recited and sung by local community singers.

The High Commissioner HE Syed Ibne Abbas, speaking on the occasion recapitulated various phases of Iqbal’s poetry. He said Iqbal was the ideological founder of Pakistan whose poetry and message emancipated Muslims of the Sub-Continent.

The High Commissioner thanked the community members for their wholehearted participation and support towards the event. High Commissioner acknowledging the encouraging response of the community members announced to hold similar events in future too.

The event spanning five hours was attended by some 70-80 people. Iranian Embassy too was represented on the occasion. Pakistani diaspora attended the event not only from Wellington but from other cities including Auckland, Palmerston North and other places to pay tribute to Iqbal.

All the guests were entertained with Pakistani savoury and sweet delicacies. It was a indeed a memorable evening for the Pakistani-Kiwis who long for such an enriching literary cum-cultural experience.
